12/10/09 06:19 pm - [info]radteacherally posting in [info]thriftwhore - Two Christmas Thrifts!

I've been cutting WAY back on my thrifting lately. I'm moving to a new apartment that is very tiny...and not knick-knack friendly. Only a few things to show! Sorry that the pictures are so big. I can't figure out how to make them smaller. The new format on the site is throwing me. Can anyone help?

Japanese made vintage Christmas Angel! I've been looking for one of these! I got her for 29 cents at the Salvation Army.

Two hand painted ceramic Chrismas Elves!!!! These have been sitting at the Salvo for weeks. My mom kept looking at them...and so I was I. We didn't know that we had both been looking at them until she said "Hey, guess what I got you at the Salvo? The coolest elves!" That's when I said...OMG the elves!!!" They were 99 cents each.

$1.99 shorts i turned into cut offs from some thrift store in Chicago

the boob tube i think maybe i've had since i started to grow lumps when i was 12

Yet again, proof that bacon makes everything better, even other pork products. This is a great little dish to make after a long day of work or school when you want something that tastes much more difficult than it was to make. The bacon gives the pork chops tons of flavor, and the apples and onions are a wonderfully sweet and savory treat to serve the pork chops on top of, and pair nicely with the saltiness of the bacon wrapped chops. Kramer even went back to seconds when I made this, which is a true sign that it's good because he's rarely a seconds kind of guy. I hope you all enjoy these as much as we did; anyone who loves bacon should! Recipe after the cut or on my blog at The Crepes of Wrath.

Dont let their pretty metallic good looks fool you...

Don't let their pretty metallic good looks fool you...

It’s been slow in coming this year, but the first glimmer of the itch to begin my Christmas baking has finally hit. I’d gone to Williams-Sonoma several days ago and purchased a set of very pretty snowflake cookie cutters. In my mind I saw them iced with pure white icing and glistening with a combination of clear dusting sugar and metallic dragees.

Some of you may well be wondering, “What in the world is a dragee?” While the name might ring any bells you’re sure to remember them – those hard, silver balls so popular in Christmas cookie decoration, be they for the buttons of snowmen or the ringers of bells, or simply glistening tips on snowflakes and stars. I was confounded when I tried to find them, having opted not to purchase them at Williams-Sonoma. I found a single brand at my local grocery store and the jar was on the very top shelf, nestled between the boxes of specialty extracts and colored dusting sugars. The price alone nearly blew me out of the water at $10.99 a jar, but I was determined that I was going to make beautiful, magazine-picture worthy cookies and coupled with how hard we’d looked for them I just went ahead and bought them.

One can certainly imagine my confusion when I got home and turned the jar around to find a label warning “FOR DECORATION ONLY.” Of course they’re for decoration! What else is one going to do? Snort them? Shoot them out of pellet guns? The other side read “India Tree Silver Dragees add an elegant touch to cakes and cookies.” Well, duh. That’s why I bought them!

In a moment of naughty, nostalgic self-indulgence I cracked the jar open and pried out one of the precious metal balls (at this price, they’ve got to be made with real silver, right?!) and slid it between my teeth. A quiet crack, that first blush of sugary bliss and then…

Unlike a Tootsie pop, not a chewy, chocolate center...

Unlike a Tootsie pop, not a chewy, chocolate center...

. . .

. . . PLASTIC?

That’s right, folks. These “FOR DECORATION ONLY” dragees, the only I’ve been able to find on the shelf, which were stuck right-smack in the middle of the other edible decorations and ingredients are, literally, for decoration ONLY. While I’d assume that consuming one or two wouldn’t kill someone, I can’t imagine that they’ll do wonders for anyone’s teeth and the texture of hard plastic pellets does leave something to be desired. What in the world is one really to do with these things – decorate their cookies and then warn the recipients to remove them? Should my cookies be given wrapped in a brass spittoon? It is a general rule, last I checked, that anything non-edible on a plate should be clearly unmistakable as such. It’s why chefs go to such great pains to make sure that they don’t serve whole chunks of cinnamon bark, bay leaves, or star anise in their food!

Thankfully the local grocery manager was just as shocked as I was to learn that these things aren’t edible. She said she was going to look at some as soon as she hung up with me, and I have a feeling that they will be moved over with the candles and other inedible baking decor. She also stated that despite having opened my jar, I am free to return them for a full refund. While I may be out of pretty-as-a-magazine sparkle, at least I won’t be out $11.

All true. I even had some time to spare after prepping the beans, so I fried up some fresh sage leaves….love crispy sage leaves with pork. YUMMS.

12/7/09 01:27 pm - [info]_buenavista posting in [info]food_porn - Chorizo, Egg, & Potato Hash

I live in Arizona, as you might remember, so I am a big fan of chorizo, which is a smoky, lightly spicy (usually) pork sausage with a beautiful deep red-orange color. I've used it before in a number of my favorite recipes, such chili, a chicken and chorizo bake, and another sort of hash with beans, chorizo, and brown rice. Kramer brought some home from the store the other day, but we were both feeling kind of tired and lazy and didn't feel like cooking a complicated meal. We decided to make a quick and delicious hash with ground chorizo, scrambled eggs, roasted red potatoes, onions, peppers, and tomatoes, and we topped it all off with a fried egg, because as we all know, egg yolk is nature's perfect sauce. I could eat this for any meal of the day, and if you've never had chorizo before, you need to try it! You don't really need any spices for this, either, because chorizo is so flavorful. Just go ahead and cook this up for a fast and hearty Southwestern meal. Recipe after the cut or on my blog at The Crepes of Wrath.

12/6/09 08:44 pm - [info]sarea_okelani posting in [info]food_porn - Homemade California rolls & ebi nigiri

Before this weekend I'd never attempted to make my own sushi rolls. Considering how adventurous I usually am with food preparation (though not, you know, in a hygiene way), and how much I love sushi, it's kind of odd. In any case the inspiration this time came from my bf, who can eat massive quantities of rolls (so he usually comes away from Japanese restaurants a little bit hungry, because massive quantities of rolls = $$$), and was craving them. So we decided to try making our own, which would be good in a financial sense, and also fun!

Verdict: it WAS both fun and delicious, and did make more financial sense, but I have to say that it's hard work! Really, many props to sushi chefs, whose creativity and skill I'd never quite appreciated to this level before, now having tried to do what they do.

We decided to keep it simple for this first excursion (though it was amazing how complex even 'simple' stuff is!) and made California rolls and ebi nigiri. While not the perfection you'd get in a real sushi place, we were pretty proud of how our attempts came out! (Plus, no matter what it looks like, it's still delicious, so we had that going for us.)

Summer09 047

I decided I would make fudge last night. I had never made fudge before, so I figured it would be a good thing to do. I did a quick search for fudge recipes, found a simple one and went on my way. Recipe Here

It was relatively painless. I didn't have any half and half or light cream, but I did have some heavy cream. So, I combined half heavy cream with half milk to get my own half and half. Playing with chocolate and sugar is fun. Some people seem to be scared of one or the other, or both. But, I've never had issues with them. My only issue was that my candy thermometer stopped at 210F. it has more graduations, but the mercury (or whatever) didn't rise above 210F last night. So, I pulled out my digital thermometer that we use for roasting and stuck that in the mix. It worked decently well, so long as I didn't touch it to the bottom of the pot.

How did it taste? *Ridiculously* good.

It's freezing here in Phoenix! I woke up this morning and it was 40 degrees! I didn't know what to do with myself; I can barely get out of bed! It's nice, though, being able to wear my coats and boots without feeling like a complete idiot. That's why I figured that I had better make some stew while the weather lasts, as I'm sure it will be back in the 80s in a few weeks. I've made stew with beer and stew with wine before, but never a stew with both beer and wine. It's really a brilliant idea. The broth in this stew is full of rich flavors that completely satisfy along with the tender meat that melts in your mouth and the flavorful root vegetables that everyone loves. I had to use Guinness, of course, because what's a stew without it? Kramer and I ate this as leftovers for a few days and it just kept getting better and better, so it's a perfect meal for a big family or even just two people! Lost Recipes

Over the weekend my cousins in Queens gifted me with a recipe I had thought long lost to death. My grandmother on my dad's side passed away in the mid 90's. She was a terrible cook. All of her food was cooked until it had died a second death, turned to mush, and ceased to be palatable. She used bisquick for pizza crust for god's sake. But her pies were to die for, especially her pie crusts. Here I gift you with her recipe. I promise you the crisco makes it extra flaky and delicious, though I admit I've never encountered a recipe that encourages you to heat the fat in pie crust.

Pie Crust - makes 2 crusts

3/4c Crisco
1 Tblsp Milk
1/4c boiling water
2c flour
1 tsp salt

Scoop crisco & milk into a bowl. Add boiling water and whisk until the consistency of whipped cream. Add remaining ingredients. Mix until just combined. Turn out and knead a few times before dividing and rolling into two crusts.

I'm pretty sure she didn't even bother with chilling before rolling, what with the boiling water and all, but I'd have to verify with relations to be sure.

The toffee melts a bit while it bakes, mixing in with the rich white chocolate chips and soft, chewy oatmeal cookie base, which has a hint of cinnamon and nutmeg. These cookies are absolutely heavenly, believe me! I brought them into work and everyone seemed to enjoy them, and I also gave some to my brother and a friend.
